Graphite has high heat resistance, and when used as an electrode for electrical discharge machining, it enables non-consumable machining, and at the same peak current value, it produces no dissipation even with a shorter pulse width than a copper electrode, so the machining speed is faster than that of a copper electrode. In addition, it has a small coefficient of thermal expansion, low specific gravity, and is resistant to thermal displacement, making it effective for high-speed machining and rough machining using large electrodes.
At Lion Technical Solution, we offer a wide range of grades of graphite electrode materials for electrical discharge machining (EDM), from rough machining to finishing machining. Graphite electrode materials for EDM are widely used as electrical discharge machining electrodes in the manufacturing process of various molds such as plastic molds, die-casting molds, forging molds, and press molds, from large to precision small molds. Compared to copper electrodes, it has superior machinability and does not generate burrs, and can speed up both cutting and electrical discharge machining.
The grade we use is characterized by an ultrafine particle structure on the micron order. Therefore, it exhibits excellent performance in electrode cutting, wire electrical discharge machining, and die-sinking electrical discharge machining. In addition, it has become possible to achieve sharp edges, reduce electrode wear, and improve discharge surface roughness and surface precision, which were not possible with conventional graphite materials. Recently, a copper graphite material for cemented carbide (ISEM-43C) has been released, and compared to current materials, it has less difference in wear during electrical discharge machining and is superior in stable machining. It also has both the excellent electrical discharge machining performance of copper and the free machining properties of graphite.
